Not so long ago I recieved a visit from a client for whom I had arranged the transfer of her home and the mortgage deed. I had also arranged the guardianship of her and her husband's (let's call them Maria and John) underage children in a will. The reason for her call was that her marriage had hit a rough spot to the point where she and her husband were getting a divorce.

Maria is Italian and had married her Canadian husband John in Italy and are now living in the Netherlands. Now that the divorce is looming, Maria has a lot of questions. Where will the divorce proceedings take place, and what about the children, the house, the mortgage, alimony, etc.?
